REPLACEMENT HEART VALVE SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18597832 titled 'REPLACEMENT HEART VALVE SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a replacement heart valve system that includes an expandable framework with valve leaflets attached to it, along with an implant delivery system to deploy the replacement valve.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Replacement heart valve implant with self-biased expandable framework
  • Valve leaflets attached to the framework
  • Implant delivery system with handle, elongate shaft assembly, and expandable balloon
  • Balloon used to shift the framework between collapsed and expanded configurations

Potential Applications: This technology can be used in medical procedures to replace damaged or malfunctioning heart valves, improving cardiac function and overall health.

Problems Solved: This technology addresses the need for effective and minimally invasive heart valve replacement procedures, reducing the risks associated with traditional open-heart surgery.

Benefits:

  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Improved cardiac function
  • Reduced risks compared to open-heart surgery

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized by medical device companies, hospitals, and cardiac surgeons to offer advanced heart valve replacement procedures to patients, potentially leading to improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Prior Art: Readers can explore prior art related to heart valve replacement systems, expandable frameworks, and implant delivery systems in medical device patents and research publications.

Frequently Updated Research: Stay informed about the latest advancements in heart valve replacement technologies, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and patient outcomes following valve replacement procedures.

Questions about Heart Valve Replacement Systems: 1. What are the potential risks associated with heart valve replacement procedures? 2. How does the self-biased expandable framework in this technology improve the efficiency of valve replacement surgeries?

Original Abstract Submitted

A replacement heart valve system may include a replacement heart valve implant including an expandable framework configured to shift from a radially collapsed to a radially expanded configuration, wherein the framework is self-biased toward the radially expanded configuration, and a plurality of valve leaflets attached to the framework. The replacement heart valve system may include an implant delivery system including a handle and an elongate shaft assembly including a tubular member fixedly attached to the handle, and an implant holding portion configured to constrain the framework in the radially collapsed configuration. The elongate shaft assembly includes an expandable balloon disposed on the tubular member within the implant holding portion, the balloon being configured to shift between deflated and inflated configurations. When the framework is constrained within the implant holding portion, at least a portion of the framework extends distal of the balloon in the deflated configuration.
