METHOD AND DEVICE FOR OPERATING AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18593408 titled 'METHOD AND DEVICE FOR OPERATING AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and device for operating an internal combustion engine with two air ducts, one for supplying air to a cylinder and the other for heating an exhaust system. The amount of air flowing through each duct is controlled based on measurements and engine operating states.

  • The method and device regulate air flow in an internal combustion engine.
  • Two air ducts control air supply to the cylinder and heater for the exhaust system.
  • Measurement signals are used to adjust air flow based on engine conditions.
  • The air ducts are connected to a common air filter for filtered ambient air.
  • Mutual influence of air flow in each duct is considered for optimal operation.

Key Features and Innovation

  • Control elements in each air duct regulate air flow.
  • Mass flow sensors measure the amount of air flowing through the ducts.
  • Common air filter provides filtered ambient air to the engine.
  • Regulation of air flow is based on measurement signals and engine states.
  • Consideration of mutual influence of air flow in each duct for efficient operation.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine including a first air duct for supplying air to a cylinder and a second air duct for supplying air to a heater for heating an exhaust system. The first and second air ducts each have a control element for controlling the amount of air flowing through them and a mass flow sensor for measuring the amount of air flowing through them. The first and second air ducts are connected to a common air filter, for providing filtered ambient air of the internal combustion engine. A regulation of the amount of air flowing through the first and second air ducts takes place using the measurement signals, depending on operating states of the internal combustion engine. A mutual influence of the air flowing through the first or second air duct is taken into account.
