ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18590013 titled 'ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a piston assembly with an adjuster assembly that includes a piston stroke limiter to control the length of the piston's return stroke, along with an inner crushable tube to maintain the length of the return stroke.

  • The piston assembly includes a housing with a piston cylinder, a piston, and an adjuster assembly.
  • The adjuster assembly consists of a piston stroke limiter, which limits the length of the piston's return stroke, and an inner crushable tube that reduces in length to maintain the return stroke length.
  • The inner crushable tube surrounds a portion of the piston and acts between the piston and the piston stroke limiter.
  • The inner crushable tube is designed to decrease in axial length when the extension stroke exceeds the retraction stroke, ensuring the return stroke remains consistent.

Potential Applications:

  • Automotive industry for engine components
  • Industrial machinery for precision control systems
  • Aerospace industry for flight control mechanisms

Problems Solved:

  • Ensures precise control over the piston's return stroke length
  • Prevents damage to the piston assembly due to excessive stroke length differences
  • Maintains consistent performance of the piston assembly over time

Benefits:

  • Improved reliability and durability of the piston assembly
  • Enhanced precision in controlling the piston's movement
  • Reduced maintenance and repair costs for equipment using the piston assembly

Commercial Applications:

  • Precision machinery manufacturing
  • Automotive engine components
  • Aerospace flight control systems

Prior Art: Prior art related to this technology may include patents or publications discussing piston assemblies with stroke limiters and crushable components for controlling piston movement.

Frequently Updated Research: Research on materials science and engineering advancements in crushable materials for inner tubes in piston assemblies may be relevant to this technology.

'Questions about Piston Assembly Technology: 1. What are the key components of the adjuster assembly in the piston assembly described in the patent application? 2. How does the inner crushable tube contribute to maintaining the length of the piston's return stroke in the assembly?

Original Abstract Submitted

A piston assembly for engaging two selectively engageable parts comprising: a housing defining a piston cylinder; a piston; and an adjuster assembly comprising: a piston stroke limiter configured to limit the length of a return stroke of the piston from an extended stroke position and a retracted stroke position, the piston stroke limiter comprising a spring and a spring guide; and an inner crushable tube, acting between the piston and the piston stroke limiter, the inner crushable tube being arranged to reduce in axial length when a length of an extension stroke exceeds a length of a retraction stroke to maintain the length of the return stroke; wherein the inner crushable tube comprises an inner crushable thin-walled tube surrounding at least a portion of the piston.
