Information relating to the control device is acquired and evaluated to determine whether a short circuit switching process has occurred, in the course of which the circuit carries out a switching process during a short circuit. If it is recognized in the course of the evaluation that a short circuit switching process has occurred, a counter reading which characterizes the number of short circuit switching processes carried out over the service life of the circuit is updated.
