OVERLAPPED DECODER SIDE MOTION REFINEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18559503 titled 'OVERLAPPED DECODER SIDE MOTION REFINEMENT

The patent application describes methods and apparatus for encoding or decoding a first structure within a picture in a video sequence.

  • Determining an initial motion vector (MV) and MV candidates for a second structure within the first structure.
  • Using MV candidates to derive first and second reference blocks, with sizes that may not be equal to the size of the second structure.
  • Deriving a cost value based on samples from the reference blocks.
  • Using the cost values from the MV candidates to determine the best MV candidate and derive prediction samples for the second structure.

Potential Applications: - Video encoding and decoding technologies - Image processing algorithms - Video streaming services

Problems Solved: - Efficient encoding and decoding of video sequences - Improved motion vector prediction accuracy - Enhanced video compression techniques

Benefits: - Higher quality video encoding and decoding - Reduced bandwidth usage for video streaming - Enhanced user experience with smoother video playback

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Video Encoding and Decoding Technology for Enhanced Streaming Services Description: This technology can be utilized by video streaming platforms to improve video quality, reduce bandwidth costs, and enhance user satisfaction, leading to a competitive edge in the market.

Questions about the technology: 1. Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and apparatus for encoding or decoding a first structure within a picture in a video sequence are provided. The method comprises, for a second structure within the first structure, determining an initial motion vector, MV, and MV candidates. The method comprises, for each of the MV candidates, using the MV candidate to derive first and second reference blocks, and a size of the first and second reference blocks may not be equal to a size of the second structure. The method comprises deriving a cost value based on samples from the first and second reference blocks. The method comprises using the cost values from the MV candidates to derive a best MV candidate and using the best MV candidate to derive prediction samples for the second structure.
