Disclosed are techniques for wireless positioning. In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) transmits, to a base station, a first message of a random access procedure, the first message indicating that the UE is a positioning-only UE, receives, from the base station, in response to transmission of the first message, a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration for the UE, the SRS configuration indicating one or more time and frequency resources on which the UE is expected to transmit SRS for an uplink-only positioning session, and transmits the SRS on the one or more time and frequency resources based on the SRS configuration.
