LIGHT DISTRIBUTION CONTROL APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18533845 titled 'LIGHT DISTRIBUTION CONTROL APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a light distribution control apparatus that uses an imaging device to capture an image of a front vehicle in front of the own vehicle. The apparatus includes a headlight that can adjust the light distribution based on the captured image, illuminating different regions with varying illuminances.

  • The apparatus includes an imaging device, a headlight, and a control unit.
  • The imaging device captures an image of the front vehicle in front of the own vehicle.
  • The headlight adjusts the light distribution to illuminate different regions with varying illuminances.
  • The control unit sets the illuminance in the first region (front vehicle) to be less than the illuminance in the second region (other than the front vehicle).
  • The control unit determines the area of the first region based on the position of the front vehicle in the captured image.

Potential Applications: 1. Automotive safety systems 2. Adaptive headlights for vehicles 3. Intelligent lighting systems for vehicles

Problems Solved: 1. Ensuring proper illumination of the front vehicle without causing glare to other drivers 2. Enhancing visibility and safety on the road 3. Optimizing energy efficiency by adjusting illuminance levels based on the surroundings

Benefits: 1. Improved safety on the road 2. Enhanced visibility in various driving conditions 3. Energy-efficient lighting control 4. Customized light distribution based on the position of surrounding vehicles

Commercial Applications: Title: Intelligent Light Distribution Control System for Vehicles This technology can be used in the automotive industry to enhance vehicle safety and improve driving visibility. It can be integrated into new vehicle models as a premium feature, appealing to safety-conscious consumers. Additionally, it can be marketed to fleet management companies to improve the safety of their vehicles and reduce the risk of accidents.

Questions about Light Distribution Control Apparatus: 1. How does the apparatus differentiate between the front vehicle and other objects on the road? 2. What are the potential cost implications of implementing this technology in vehicles?

Original Abstract Submitted

A light distribution control apparatus includes an imaging device capable of capturing an image of a front vehicle existing in front of an own vehicle, a headlight capable of irradiating a front region of the own vehicle, and a control unit capable of executing light distribution control for controlling light distribution of the headlight so that a predetermined first region including the front vehicle and a predetermined second region other than the first region are irradiated with different illuminances based on the captured image obtained by capturing an image of the front region of the own vehicle. The control unit sets an illuminance irradiated in the first region to be less than an illuminance irradiated in the second region, and sets an area of the first region based on a position in a lateral direction of the front vehicle in the captured image.
