Closure Device and Method for Closing Openings in Carrier Components - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18522669 titled 'Closure Device and Method for Closing Openings in Carrier Components

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a closure device for sealing openings in carrier components, particularly in vehicle bodies of motor vehicles. The device includes a base body and a sealing element that can be expanded by heat to completely close off the opening.

  • The closure device is designed to be disposed in an opening of a carrier component, with the sealing element expanding in the heat to seal the opening.
  • The base body of the closure device is formed of a hard component and includes a flange section that extends parallel to the surface of the carrier component.
  • The closure device includes means for holding it in place in the region of the opening of the carrier component.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in various industries where sealing openings in carrier components is required, such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of effectively sealing openings in carrier components, ensuring a secure closure that can withstand different environmental conditions.

Benefits

The closure device provides a reliable and durable sealing solution for openings in carrier components, enhancing the overall performance and longevity of the components.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications of this technology include automotive manufacturing, aerospace engineering, and industrial equipment production.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be similar closure devices used in different industries, such as in the construction sector for sealing building components.

Unanswered Questions

How does the expansion of the sealing element affect the overall sealing performance of the closure device?

The expansion of the sealing element ensures a tight and complete closure of the opening in the carrier component, but the exact impact on the sealing performance in different conditions is not explicitly discussed in the abstract.

What specific materials are used for the base body and the sealing element in the closure device?

The abstract mentions that the sealing element is formed from a material that can be expanded by heat, but the specific materials used for both the base body and the sealing element are not detailed.

Original Abstract Submitted

According to the disclosure, a closure device is provided for closing openings in carrier components, in particular in vehicle bodies of motor vehicles. This comprises a base body, preferably formed of a hard component, for at least partially disposing in an opening of a carrier component having at least one through opening forming a media passage, the base body having a flange section extending parallel to a surface of the carrier component defining the opening; and a sealing element, the sealing element being formed from a material which can be expanded by means of heat, and being arranged on the base body in order, in the expanded state, to completely close off the opening of the carrier component, the closure device having, in particular, means for holding the closure device in the region of the opening of the carrier component.
