METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR USING A BIASED MEMBER TO ASCERTAIN APPROPRIATE STENT SELECTION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18521705 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR USING A BIASED MEMBER TO ASCERTAIN APPROPRIATE STENT SELECTION

Simplified Explanation

The apparatus described in the patent application is a device used to determine the effective diameter of a blood vessel at a deployment site. Here are some key points about the innovation:

  • Outer member with a garage and inner member slidingly disposed within the garage
  • Inner member can be advanced distally to measure the diameter of a blood vessel
  • Inner member includes an elongate shaft and a biased member that extends radially outwardly
  • Biased member can be visible via ultrasound and/or fluoroscopic imaging

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in medical procedures such as angioplasty or stent placement to accurately measure the diameter of blood vessels.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of accurately determining the diameter of blood vessels during medical procedures, which is crucial for selecting the appropriate size of devices like stents.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved accuracy in measuring blood vessel diameter, which can lead to better outcomes in medical procedures and reduce the risk of complications.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications of this technology include medical device companies that manufacture tools for vascular interventions.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be similar devices used in the medical field for measuring blood vessel diameter during procedures.

Unanswered Questions

How does the device handle variations in blood vessel diameter due to factors like plaque buildup or vessel elasticity?

The patent application does not provide specific details on how the device accounts for variations in blood vessel diameter, so further information would be needed to address this question.

Are there any limitations to using this device in certain types of blood vessels or medical conditions?

The patent application does not mention any limitations of the device, so additional research or testing may be necessary to determine if there are any restrictions on its use.

Original Abstract Submitted

An apparatus for determining an effective diameter of a blood vessel at a deployment site includes an outer member defining a garage disposed within the outer member and an inner member slidingly disposed within the garage, the inner member adapted to be advanced distally from the garage in order to obtain measure a diameter of a blood vessel in which the apparatus is disposed. The inner member includes an elongate shaft and a biased member extending from the elongate shaft, the biased member adapted to extend radially outwardly from the elongate shaft when not constrained by being within the garage. The biased member may be visible via ultrasound imaging and/or fluoroscopic imaging.
