DETERMINING MERCHANT ENFORCED TRANSACTION RULES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18514548 titled 'DETERMINING MERCHANT ENFORCED TRANSACTION RULES

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes systems that determine merchant-enforced transaction rules by analyzing transaction data associated with merchants. The systems use machine learning models to identify user spending patterns and notify users of card-based transaction rules when they are near a specific merchant.

  • The determination server receives transaction data from multiple merchants.
  • A histogram of payments associated with a specific category of merchants is generated.
  • Transaction data with purchase amounts above or below a predetermined threshold is filtered out.
  • The server calculates average purchase amounts for merchants in the category and for each individual merchant.
  • User spending patterns are analyzed to determine merchant-specific transaction rules.
  • Notifications about the transaction rules are sent to the user's device when they are near the merchant.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in the retail industry to enhance security and provide personalized shopping experiences for customers.

Problems Solved

This technology helps merchants enforce transaction rules effectively and efficiently, reducing the risk of fraudulent activities.

Benefits

- Improved security for card-based transactions - Personalized shopping experiences for users - Efficient enforcement of transaction rules by merchants

Potential Commercial Applications

"Enhancing Retail Security and Personalized Shopping Experiences with Merchant-Enforced Transaction Rules"

Possible Prior Art

There may be existing systems that analyze transaction data for security purposes, but the specific use of machine learning models to determine merchant-enforced transaction rules based on user spending patterns may be a novel approach.

Unanswered Questions

How does the system ensure the privacy and security of user data during the analysis process?

The patent application does not provide details on how user data is protected and secured while being analyzed to determine transaction rules.

What measures are in place to prevent false notifications being sent to users?

The patent application does not mention any specific mechanisms to prevent false notifications from being sent to users when they are near a merchant.

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems as described herein determine merchant enforced transaction rules. A determination server may receive transaction data associated with a plurality of merchants. The determination server may generate a histogram of payments associated with a merchant category and filter out transaction data having purchase amounts above or below a predetermined threshold. The determination server may determine a first average purchase amount associated with merchants in the merchant category and a second average purchase amount associated with each merchant in the merchant category. The determination server may determine user spending patterns and that a first merchant in the merchant category enforces one or more card-based transaction rules using machine learning models. After determining that a user device is proximately located to the first merchant, a notification indicating the one or more card-based transaction rules associated with the first merchant may be sent to the user device.
