Motion Compensated Picture Boundary Padding - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18497748 titled 'Motion Compensated Picture Boundary Padding

The patent application relates to methods and systems for boundary padding for motion compensation in video coding.

  • Motion vectors for motion compensation padded blocks are determined by scanning neighboring boundary blocks and co-located temporal blocks.
  • The motion compensation padded block is padded according to the motion vector for use in motion compensation of other pictures in the video.

Potential Applications:

  • Video compression technologies
  • Multimedia streaming services
  • Video editing software

Problems Solved:

  • Enhancing video quality through improved motion compensation
  • Optimizing video coding efficiency

Benefits:

  • Higher quality video encoding
  • Reduced data transmission requirements
  • Enhanced user experience in multimedia applications

Commercial Applications:

  • Integration into video streaming platforms
  • Inclusion in video editing software for professionals

Questions about Boundary Padding for Motion Compensation: 1. How does boundary padding improve motion compensation in video coding?

  - Boundary padding ensures accurate motion compensation by providing additional information from neighboring blocks.

2. What are the key benefits of using motion vectors for motion compensation in video coding?

  - Motion vectors help improve the efficiency and quality of video encoding by accurately predicting motion between frames.

Original Abstract Submitted

This disclosure relates generally to video coding and particularly to methods and systems for boundary padding for motion compensation. For example, a motion vector for a motion compensation padded block in a motion compensation padding area of a picture in a video may be determined from scanning a set of neighboring boundary blocks of the picture and/or a set of co-located temporal blocks of the boundary blocks. The motion compensation padded block may be padded according to the motion vector and used for motion compensation of other pictures in the video.
