Multiple Operating Modes to Expand Dynamic Range - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18413521 titled 'Multiple Operating Modes to Expand Dynamic Range

The patent application discusses a camera system with multiple operating modes to expand dynamic range.

  • The camera system includes a first image sensor with a specific dynamic range for capturing a range of luminance levels in a scene.
  • Additionally, the system includes a second image sensor with a different dynamic range for capturing another range of luminance levels in the scene.
  • A processor is connected to both image sensors and is programmed to identify objects of different types in images captured by each sensor.

Potential Applications: This technology could be used in surveillance systems to capture clear images in both bright and dark lighting conditions. It could also be applied in automotive cameras to enhance visibility in varying lighting environments.

Problems Solved: This technology addresses the limitation of traditional cameras with a fixed dynamic range, allowing for better image quality in diverse lighting conditions.

Benefits: Improved image quality in scenes with high contrast lighting. Enhanced object recognition capabilities in different lighting environments.

Commercial Applications: This technology could be valuable in the development of advanced security cameras, automotive cameras, and other imaging systems for various industries.

Prior Art: Researchers interested in this technology may want to explore patents related to dynamic range expansion in imaging systems.

Frequently Updated Research: Researchers in the field of computer vision and imaging technology may be conducting ongoing research on methods to enhance dynamic range in camera systems.

Questions about the Technology: 1. How does this technology improve image quality in scenes with high contrast lighting? 2. What are the potential commercial applications of this camera system technology?

Original Abstract Submitted

Example embodiments relate to multiple operating modes to expand dynamic range. An example embodiment includes a camera system. The camera system may include a first image sensor having a first dynamic range corresponding to a first range of luminance levels in a scene. The system may also include a second image sensor having a second dynamic range corresponding to a second range of luminance levels in the scene. The camera system may further include a processor coupled to the first image sensor and the second image sensor. The processor may be configured to execute instructions to identify objects of a first type in a first image of the scene captured by the first image sensor and identify objects of a second object type in a second image of the scene captured by the second image sensor.
