INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS AND CONTROL METHOD - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18412755 titled 'INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS AND CONTROL METHOD

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes an information processing apparatus with a ranging sensor that measures distances to objects in a detection range, storing this information in memory for processing by a processor. The processor can detect the range of a person, their face, and the orientation of the face based on the distance information.

  • The apparatus includes a ranging sensor that divides a detection range into measurement units for distance measurement.
  • Distance information for each measurement unit is stored in memory temporarily.
  • The processor processes the distance information to detect the range of a person, their face, and the orientation of the face.

Potential Applications: 1. Security systems for detecting and tracking individuals. 2. Augmented reality applications for facial recognition and tracking. 3. Robotics for human interaction and navigation.

Problems Solved: 1. Accurate distance measurement in a detection range. 2. Efficient detection and tracking of individuals. 3. Precise identification of facial features.

Benefits: 1. Enhanced security and surveillance capabilities. 2. Improved human-machine interaction. 3. Advanced augmented reality experiences.

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized in security systems, robotics, augmented reality devices, and human-computer interaction technologies, offering enhanced functionalities and capabilities in various commercial sectors.

Questions about the Technology: 1. How does the ranging sensor divide the detection range into measurement units? 2. What are the specific processing capabilities of the processor in detecting the range of a person and their face?

Frequently Updated Research: Ongoing research in this field focuses on improving the accuracy and speed of distance measurement and facial recognition algorithms, as well as expanding the applications of such technology in different industries.

Original Abstract Submitted

An information processing apparatus includes a ranging sensor which divides a predetermined detection range into a plurality of measurement units to measure the distance to an object for each measurement unit; a memory which temporarily stores distance information indicative of the distance for each measurement unit measured by the ranging sensor; and a processor which executes processing based on the distance information for each measurement unit. The processor detects a range of a person present in the detection range based on the distance information for each measurement unit, detects a range of a face of the person in the range of the person detected in the detection range based on the distance information for each measurement unit, and detects the orientation of the face based on distance information in the range of the face among pieces of the distance information each piece for each measurement unit.
