INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS AND METHOD - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18396635 titled 'INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS AND METHOD

The patent application describes an information processing apparatus that assists in the transition from autonomous driving to manned driving in a vehicle by providing timely notifications and relevant information to the driver.

  • The processor determines the optimal timing for notifying the driver about the upcoming switch from autonomous to manned driving based on the vehicle's location and surroundings.
  • When the predetermined timing is reached, the apparatus outputs spoken content related to an object detected in front of the vehicle by a camera, preparing the driver for the switch.
  • This innovation aims to enhance the driver's awareness and readiness during the transition phase, ensuring a smooth and safe handover of control from the autonomous system to the driver.

Potential Applications: - Automotive industry for autonomous vehicles - Transportation and logistics companies - Fleet management systems

Problems Solved: - Improving driver awareness during the transition from autonomous to manned driving - Enhancing safety and efficiency in autonomous vehicle operations

Benefits: - Increased driver confidence and preparedness - Reduced risk of accidents during the transition phase - Improved overall driving experience for users of autonomous vehicles

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhancing Driver Transition in Autonomous Vehicles: A New Information Processing Innovation" This technology can be utilized by automotive manufacturers, transportation companies, and fleet operators to improve the transition process between autonomous and manned driving, leading to safer and more efficient operations.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the apparatus determine the optimal timing for notifying the driver about the transition? - The processor analyzes the vehicle's location and surroundings to predict the best timing for the notification. 2. What type of information is included in the spoken content provided to the driver during the transition? - The content focuses on objects detected in front of the vehicle, preparing the driver for the switch from autonomous to manned driving.

Original Abstract Submitted

An information processing apparatus includes a processor configured to: determine a first timing that precedes a notification for announcing in advance switching from autonomous driving of a vehicle to manned driving, in a case where occurrence of the switching from autonomous driving to manned driving is predicted due to the vehicle capable of autonomous driving approaching a predetermined location, and output to the vehicle, in a case where the first timing is reached, utterance content that takes, as a topic, an object that is present in front of the vehicle, the object being detected from a captured image from a vehicle-mounted camera of the vehicle.
