Speculative Request Indicator in Request Message - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18341217 titled 'Speculative Request Indicator in Request Message

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and apparatus for a speculative request indicator in a cache hierarchy. This indicator helps differentiate between demand requests and speculative requests for cache blocks.

  • The method involves providing a messaging protocol for transfer operations in the cache hierarchy, indicating acceptable cache coherency states for a cache block in a request message.
  • It also includes providing a speculative request indicator in the messaging protocol to differentiate between demand and speculative requests when sending the request message.

Key Features and Innovation

  • Introduction of a speculative request indicator in the messaging protocol for cache hierarchies.
  • Helps differentiate between demand and speculative requests for cache blocks.
  • Improves efficiency and performance in cache operations.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in:

  • Computer systems with cache hierarchies.
  • Data centers for optimizing cache operations.
  • High-performance computing environments.

Problems Solved

  • Efficiently managing demand and speculative requests in cache hierarchies.
  • Enhancing cache coherency and performance.
  • Improving overall system efficiency.

Benefits

  • Better differentiation between demand and speculative requests.
  • Enhanced cache coherency and performance.
  • Improved system efficiency and responsiveness.

Commercial Applications

Title: "Optimizing Cache Operations in Computer Systems" This technology can be utilized in:

  • Server systems to improve data processing speed.
  • Cloud computing environments for enhanced performance.
  • Networking equipment for faster data retrieval.

Questions about Speculative Request Indicator

What are the main benefits of using a speculative request indicator in cache hierarchies?

The main benefits include improved efficiency in managing demand and speculative requests, enhanced cache coherency, and overall system performance.

How does the speculative request indicator differentiate between demand and speculative requests?

The speculative request indicator in the messaging protocol helps agents in the cache hierarchy distinguish between demand requests that require immediate data access and speculative requests that are for potential future use.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method and apparatus for a speculative request indicator is described. A method includes providing, for a cache hierarchy, a messaging protocol used for transfer operations among agents in the cache hierarchy, the messaging protocol indicating acceptable cache coherency states for a cache block indicated in a request message and providing, in the messaging protocol for selection by an agent, a speculative request indicator when sending the request message, wherein the speculative request indicator differentiates between a demand request and a speculative request with respect to the cache block.
