MEDICAL IMAGING SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18293798 titled 'MEDICAL IMAGING SYSTEM

The present invention is a medical imaging system that includes an X-ray source unit, an X-ray detector unit, a sensor unit, a reference structure, and a processing unit.

  • X-ray detector unit acquires X-ray image data of a patient positioned between the X-ray detector unit and the X-ray source unit.
  • Reference structure is part of the X-ray detector unit or fixedly connected to it.
  • Sensor unit's orientation is known with respect to the X-ray source unit.
  • Sensor unit acquires a sensor image containing image data of the reference structure.
  • Processing unit determines the position of the X-ray detector unit relative to the X-ray source unit using the sensor image and orientation data.

Potential Applications: - Medical imaging for diagnostic purposes - Radiation therapy planning - Image-guided procedures

Problems Solved: - Accurate positioning of the X-ray detector unit - Enhanced image quality - Improved patient safety

Benefits: - Precise imaging results - Reduced radiation exposure - Efficient workflow in medical settings

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Medical Imaging System for Enhanced Diagnostics This technology can be used in hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers for various medical imaging procedures, improving accuracy and patient outcomes.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the sensor unit determine the position of the X-ray detector unit? 2. What are the advantages of using a reference structure in the imaging system?

Original Abstract Submitted

The present invention relates to a medical imaging system (), comprising: an X-ray source unit (); an X-ray detector unit (); a sensor unit (); a reference structure (); and a processing unit ()). The X-ray detector unit is configured to be placed relative to the X-ray source to acquire X-ray image data of a patient (P) positioned between the X-ray detector unit and the X-ray source unit. The reference structure is part of the X-ray detector unit or the reference structure is configured to be fixedly connected to the X-ray detector unit. An orientation of the sensor unit is known with respect to an orientation of the X-ray source unit. The sensor unit is configured to acquire a sensor image when the X-ray detector unit is placed relative to the X-ray source unit and the patient is positioned between the X-ray detector unit and the X-ray source unit, and wherein the sensor image comprises image data of the reference structure. The sensor unit is configured to provide the sensor image to the processing unit. The processing unit is configured to determine a position of the X-ray detector unit with respect to a position of the X-ray source unit, and wherein the determination comprises utilization of the orientation of the sensor unit with respect to the orientation of the X-ray source unit and the image data of the reference structure.
