POSITIONING REFERENCE SIGNAL BASED POSITIONING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18282533 titled 'POSITIONING REFERENCE SIGNAL BASED POSITIONING

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method of operating a terminal node configured to communicate with network nodes using a re-configurable relaying device (RRD) that provides spatial filters for incident signals. The method involves receiving positioning reference signals (PRSs) from network nodes, and when PRSs from the same network node are received, transmitting a measurement report message with positioning information for the terminal node based on the received PRSs.

  • Explanation of the patent/innovation:

- Terminal node communicates with network nodes using a re-configurable relaying device (RRD) with spatial filters. - Receives positioning reference signals (PRSs) from network nodes. - Transmits a measurement report message with positioning information based on received PRSs from the same network node.

Potential applications of this technology: - Improved positioning accuracy in wireless communication systems. - Enhanced signal transmission and reception in complex network environments.

Problems solved by this technology: - Addressing signal interference and multipath propagation in wireless networks. - Enhancing the reliability and efficiency of location-based services.

Benefits of this technology: - Increased accuracy and reliability of positioning information for terminal nodes. - Improved overall performance and quality of wireless communication systems.

Potential commercial applications of this technology: - Location-based services in smart devices and IoT applications. - Wireless communication systems for industrial automation and smart cities.

Possible prior art: - Prior art may include patents related to signal processing in wireless communication systems. - Research papers on spatial filtering techniques for improving signal quality in networks.

Unanswered questions: 1. How does the re-configurable relaying device (RRD) adapt its spatial filters to different spatial directions? 2. What specific algorithms or methods are used to process the received positioning reference signals (PRSs) for accurate positioning information?

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of operating a terminal node () configured to communicate with one or more network nodes using a re-configurable relaying device (), RRD, is provided. The RRD is re-configurable to provide spatial filters, each one of the spatial filters being associated with a respective spatial direction into which incident signals are selectively transmitted by the RRD. The method comprises receiving () a plurality of positioning reference signals, PRSs, transmitted by the one or more network nodes, and, upon a first PRS () and a second PRS () of the plurality of PRSs being received from a same network node () of the one or more network nodes, the first PRS () being received along a path which is relayed at the RRD (): transmitting () a measurement report message comprising positioning information for the terminal node () based on at least the first PRS () and second PRS ().
