TEMPORAL FILTER - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18269873 titled 'TEMPORAL FILTER

The abstract describes a method performed by a temporal filter, involving obtaining a current picture and one or more neighbor pictures, determining filter weights, and calculating filtered pixel values.

  • The method involves obtaining a current picture and one or more neighbor pictures.
  • Filter weights are determined based on pixel values of the current picture and neighbor pictures.
  • Filtered pixel values are calculated using the filter weights and pixel values from the current and neighbor pictures.

Potential Applications: This technology can be used in image and video processing applications where temporal filtering is required to enhance image quality and reduce noise.

Problems Solved: This technology addresses the need for effective temporal filtering to improve image quality and reduce artifacts in video processing.

Benefits: - Improved image quality - Reduced noise and artifacts in video processing - Enhanced visual experience for viewers

Commercial Applications: This technology can be applied in video streaming services, surveillance systems, medical imaging, and digital photography to enhance image quality and provide a better viewing experience for users.

Questions about Temporal Filtering: 1. How does temporal filtering improve image quality in video processing? Temporal filtering helps to reduce noise and artifacts by considering neighboring pictures to enhance the current picture. 2. What are the key factors that determine the effectiveness of temporal filtering in image and video processing? The filter weights and the pixel values from the current and neighbor pictures play a crucial role in determining the quality of the filtered output.

Original Abstract Submitted

There is provided a method, performed by a temporal filter. The method comprises obtaining a current picture and a set of one or more neighbor pictures comprising a first neighbor picture, wherein each of the one or more neighbor pictures either precedes or follows the current picture in a picture count order. The method comprises, based on a first block of pixel values of the current picture and a first block of pixel values in the first neighbor picture, determining a first filter weight, W, for at least a first pixel value in the first block of pixel values of the current picture, wherein the first block of pixel values in the first neighbor picture correspond to the first block of pixel values in the current picture. The method comprises, calculating a first filtered pixel value, Pf, at least using as inputs to the calculation: W, P, and Pr, where PI is the first pixel value from the first block of pixel values of the current picture, and Pr is a pixel value from the first neighbor picture that corresponds to the first pixel value.
