METHOD OF CONTROLLING CLEANING OF SENSOR UNITS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18209745 titled 'METHOD OF CONTROLLING CLEANING OF SENSOR UNITS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for controlling the cleaning of sensor units in a vehicle based on the driving environment and weather conditions.

  • Determining if autonomous driving is possible
  • Checking if the vehicle is in a rainy environment
  • Setting priorities for sensor units based on driving environment and rain
  • Adjusting air pressure and cleaning mode for sensor units
  • Spraying air stored in a tank to clean sensor units

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in autonomous vehicles, drones, and other robotic systems that rely on sensors for navigation and operation.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses the issue of sensor obstructions due to environmental factors like rain, dust, or debris, ensuring accurate data collection and safe operation of the vehicle.

Benefits

- Improved sensor performance and accuracy - Reduced maintenance costs for sensor cleaning - Enhanced safety and reliability of autonomous systems

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology could be utilized in the automotive industry for self-driving cars, in agriculture for precision farming equipment, and in industrial settings for automated machinery.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be automated car wash systems that use sensors to detect the size and shape of vehicles for optimal cleaning.

Unanswered Questions

How does the system determine the optimal cleaning mode for each sensor unit?

The abstract mentions setting a cleaning mode based on the driving environment, but it does not specify the criteria or algorithms used for this determination.

What is the capacity of the air tank for storing cleaning air?

The abstract mentions spraying air stored in an air tank for cleaning the sensor units, but it does not provide information on the size or capacity of the air tank.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of controlling cleaning of a sensor unit, includes determining, by a controller, whether autonomous driving is possible, determining, by a measurement unit, whether a vehicle is in a rainy environment, determining, by the controller, priorities of a plurality of sensor units according to a driving environment of the vehicle during the autonomous driving of the vehicle, setting, by the controller, the priorities of the sensor units according to the rainy environment and the driving environment of the vehicle, and pressure of air according to the driving environment, and setting a cleaning mode for determining air sprayed to each of the sensor units, and spraying air stored in an air tank to the sensor units according to the set cleaning mode.
