PLANNING SYSTEMS FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18187546 titled 'PLANNING SYSTEMS FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

    • Simplified Explanation:**

The patent application describes a method for autonomous vehicles to switch between different planners based on sensor data and vehicle state.

    • Key Features and Innovation:**
  • Determining a maneuver for an autonomous vehicle based on sensor data.
  • Identifying a second planner that supports parameters deviating from the first planner's restrictions.
  • Triggering a switch between planners based on the vehicle's state.
  • Maneuvering the vehicle using the first planner until the switch criteria are met.
  • Autonomously switching from the first planner to the second planner.
    • Potential Applications:**

This technology can be applied in autonomous vehicles, robotics, and other systems that require dynamic planning and decision-making capabilities.

    • Problems Solved:**

This technology addresses the need for adaptive planning in autonomous systems to handle complex scenarios that may not be supported by a single planner.

    • Benefits:**
  • Improved adaptability and flexibility in autonomous systems.
  • Enhanced safety and efficiency in navigating challenging environments.
  • Optimal utilization of different planning algorithms based on specific requirements.
    • Commercial Applications:**

This technology could be utilized in autonomous vehicles for transportation, delivery services, industrial automation, and smart city infrastructure.

    • Questions about the Technology:**

1. How does this technology improve the overall performance of autonomous vehicles? 2. What are the potential challenges in implementing and integrating multiple planners in autonomous systems?

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and techniques are provided for using different planners for autonomous driving. An example method can include determining, based on sensor data from one or more sensors of an autonomous vehicle (AV), a maneuver to be performed by the AV according to one or more parameters that deviate from one or more restrictions of a first planner being used by the AV to navigate a scene; identifying a second planner of the AV that supports the one or more parameters that deviate from the one or more restrictions of the first planner; determining a state of the AV selected to trigger a switch from the first planner to the second planner; maneuvering the AV using the first planner until the state of the AV is satisfied; and in response to determining that the state of the AV is satisfied, autonomously switching from the first planner to the second planner.
