Method for Determining Spectrum Utilization - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18158127 titled 'Method for Determining Spectrum Utilization

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method used by a network node to determine the utilization of different frequency bands within a given bandwidth. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves selecting one or more numerologies (frequency configurations) from a set of available options.
  • For each selected numerology, the method calculates the spectrum utilization, which represents how efficiently the numerology can utilize the available bandwidth.
  • The spectrum utilization is determined based on the assumption that the selected numerology is transmitted across the entire allocated bandwidth.
  • Using the allocated bandwidth and the calculated spectrum utilization, the method calculates the allocation of physical resource blocks (PRBs), which are the basic units of frequency resources.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication networks: The method can be used in cellular networks to optimize the allocation of frequency resources and improve overall network efficiency.
  • Internet of Things (IoT): The method can be applied to IoT networks to efficiently allocate frequency resources for various IoT devices.
  • 5G and beyond: As future wireless technologies evolve, this method can help in dynamically allocating frequency resources based on changing network conditions and requirements.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient spectrum utilization: By calculating the spectrum utilization for different numerologies, the method ensures that frequency resources are utilized optimally, minimizing waste and maximizing network capacity.
  • Dynamic resource allocation: The method allows for flexible allocation of PRBs based on the selected numerologies, enabling efficient use of available bandwidth in varying network conditions.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved network capacity: By optimizing spectrum utilization, the method can increase the overall capacity of a wireless network, allowing for more simultaneous connections and higher data rates.
  • Enhanced network efficiency: The dynamic allocation of PRBs based on selected numerologies ensures that frequency resources are efficiently utilized, leading to improved network performance and reduced congestion.
  • Future-proofing: The method can adapt to evolving wireless technologies and changing network requirements, making it suitable for future generations of wireless networks.

Original Abstract Submitted

According to certain embodiments, a method in a network node ( A) for determining spectrum utilization for a plurality of numerologies transmitted within an allocated bandwidth includes selecting one or more of the plurality of numerologies. For each of the one or more selected numerologies, a spectrum utilization is determined. The spectrum utilization is based on the spectrum utilization that would be achieved if the selected numerology was transmitted across the allocated bandwidth. A physical resource block (PRB) allocation is calculated based on the allocated bandwidth and the spectrum utilization.
