CAMERA FOR A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE WITH OPTICAL IMAGE STABILIZATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18152614 titled 'CAMERA FOR A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE WITH OPTICAL IMAGE STABILIZATION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a camera for a portable electronic device that includes a housing, two lens assemblies, a mirror, and an image sensor. It also includes an image stabilization apparatus that compensates for camera rotation.

  • The camera has a housing, two lens assemblies, a mirror, and an image sensor.
  • The first lens assembly has a first optical axis, and the second lens assembly has a second optical axis.
  • A mirror is placed at the point where the first and second optical axes intersect.
  • An image sensor is placed on the second optical axis.
  • The camera includes an image stabilization apparatus.
  • The image stabilization apparatus has a first detector that generates a signal in response to camera rotation around an axis perpendicular to the optical axes.
  • A first actuator rotates the first lens assembly and the mirror in response to the signal to compensate for camera rotation.
  • The rotation is done around a first rotation axis perpendicular to the optical axes.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Mobile phones and smartphones
  • Digital cameras
  • Action cameras
  • Surveillance cameras
  • Video conferencing devices

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Camera shake and blurriness caused by camera rotation during handheld use.
  • Unstable images and videos due to movement or vibrations.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved image and video quality by reducing camera shake.
  • Enhanced user experience by providing stable and clear images.
  • Enables capturing sharp and focused images even in challenging conditions.
  • Reduces the need for post-processing or editing to correct shaky footage.

Original Abstract Submitted

A camera for a portable electronic device is provided. The camera comprises a housing, a first lens assembly () having a first optical axis, a second lens assembly () having a second optical axis, a mirror () placed at a point of intersection of the first and the second optical axis, and an image sensor () placed on the second optical axis. Furthermore, the camera comprises an image stabilisation apparatus, comprising a first detector configured to generate a first signal in response to a rotation of the camera about an axis that is perpendicular to both the first and the second optical axis and a first actuator configured to rotate the first lens assembly () and the mirror () in response to the first signal relative to the housing about a first rotation axis perpendicular to the first and second optical axis for compensating the rotation of the camera.
