Apparatus and Method of Controlling Door for Vehicle - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18148014 titled 'Apparatus and Method of Controlling Door for Vehicle

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an apparatus for controlling a vehicle door using a sensor unit. The sensor unit detects objects near the door and sends signals to a controller. The controller calculates the distance between the object and the door and sets a range for sensing based on this distance. The controller then gradually reduces the distance between the object and the door by controlling the door to open, until the object is sensed within a predetermined range. The range for sensing is longer when the door is open compared to when it is closed.

  • Sensor unit in the door detects objects near the vehicle door
  • Controller calculates the distance between the object and the door
  • Controller sets a range for sensing based on the distance
  • Door is gradually opened to reduce the distance between the object and the door
  • Object is sensed within a predetermined range
  • Range for sensing is longer when the door is open

Potential Applications

  • Vehicle doors with improved safety features
  • Automated parking systems
  • Collision avoidance systems

Problems Solved

  • Accidental collisions with objects near the vehicle door
  • Difficulty in parking or maneuvering in tight spaces
  • Enhanced safety for passengers and pedestrians

Benefits

  • Improved safety for vehicle occupants and pedestrians
  • Reduced risk of damage to the vehicle or surrounding objects
  • Enhanced convenience and ease of parking in tight spaces

Original Abstract Submitted

An apparatus can be used for controlling a door for a vehicle. A sensor unit is provided in the door and configured to sense an object adjacent to a region outside of the door. A controller configured to calculate a distance between the object and the door based on a signal received from the sensor unit, set a range by dividing and setting sensing ranges for each sensing distance of the sensor unit, and control the door to be opened while the distance to the object is gradually reduced in a state where the door is closed, such that the object is sensed within a predetermined range. The range is set by setting a maximum sensing distance in a state where the door is opened to be longer than in the state where the door is closed.
