OPTICAL MODULATOR AND IMAGE PROJECTOR BASED ON LEAKY-MODE WAVEGUIDE WITH TEMPORAL MULTIPLEXING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18135006 titled 'OPTICAL MODULATOR AND IMAGE PROJECTOR BASED ON LEAKY-MODE WAVEGUIDE WITH TEMPORAL MULTIPLEXING

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a leaky-mode acousto-optical modulator equipped with a switchable beam redirector to generate visual images suitable for direct viewing without image-forming optics.

  • The leaky-mode acousto-optical modulator can be used to create visual images without the need for traditional optics.
  • To expand the field of view for visual displays, a switchable beam redirector, such as a switchable-angle reflector, can be added to the modulator.
  • The switchable beam redirector provides field of view portions one by one in a time-sequential manner, allowing for a continuous synthetic field of view suitable for wide-angle visual display applications.

Potential Applications

The technology could be used in virtual reality headsets, flight simulators, and other immersive display systems.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of limited field of view in traditional visual display systems, providing a wider and more immersive viewing experience.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include enhanced visual immersion, improved user experience, and the ability to create wide-angle visual displays without complex optics.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications include gaming, entertainment, training simulations, and virtual tours.

Possible Prior Art

Prior art may include other methods of expanding field of view in visual display systems, such as curved screens or multiple projectors.

Unanswered Questions

How does the switchable beam redirector impact the overall performance of the modulator?

The article does not delve into the specific technical details of how the switchable beam redirector affects the modulator's functionality and image quality.

Are there any limitations to the use of a leaky-mode acousto-optical modulator in visual display applications?

The article does not address any potential drawbacks or limitations of using this type of modulator for visual display purposes.

Original Abstract Submitted

A leaky-mode acousto-optical modulator may be used to generate visual images suitable for direct viewing, without image-forming optics. To extend a field of view of the modulator to limits suitable for visual displays, the leaky-mode acousto-optical modulator may be equipped with a switchable beam redirector, e.g. a switchable-angle reflector, providing field of view portions one by one in a time-sequential manner. The field of view portions coalesce into a continuous synthetic field of view suitable for wide-angle visual display applications.
