PRIORITY-BASED NETWORK BANDWIDTH ALLOCATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18132436 titled 'PRIORITY-BASED NETWORK BANDWIDTH ALLOCATION

The patent application describes methods and systems for priority-based network bandwidth allocation in virtualized computing instances.

  • The first computer system detects when network bandwidth allocation is needed for a virtualized computing instance.
  • It identifies a priority level associated with the virtualized computing instance, a logical network element, or a group that includes them.
  • The system obtains network bandwidth capacity information from physical network adapters capable of forwarding traffic for the virtualized computing instance.
  • Based on the priority level and capacity information, a priority-based network bandwidth allocation policy is configured for the virtualized computing instance.

Potential Applications: - Cloud computing environments - Virtualized networks - Data centers

Problems Solved: - Efficient allocation of network bandwidth in virtualized environments - Prioritization of network traffic based on specific requirements

Benefits: - Improved performance for critical applications - Enhanced network resource utilization - Better quality of service for users

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhanced Network Bandwidth Allocation for Virtualized Environments" This technology can be used in cloud service providers, data centers, and network management systems to optimize network bandwidth allocation for virtualized computing instances.

Questions about Priority-Based Network Bandwidth Allocation: 1. How does this technology improve network performance in virtualized environments?

  - This technology ensures that critical applications receive the necessary network bandwidth to operate efficiently, enhancing overall performance.

2. What are the key factors considered when determining the priority level for network bandwidth allocation?

  - The priority level is based on the specific requirements of the virtualized computing instance, logical network element, or group, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively.

Original Abstract Submitted

Example methods and systems for priority-based network bandwidth allocation are described. In one example, a first computer system may detect an event indicating that network bandwidth allocation is required for a virtualized computing instance. The first computer system may identify, from multiple priority levels, a first priority level that is associated with (a) the virtualized computing instance, (b) a logical network element to which the virtualized computing instance is attached, or (c) a group that includes the virtualized computing instance or the logical network element. The first computer system may obtain network bandwidth capacity information associated with physical network adapter(s) capable of forwarding traffic associated with the virtualized computing instance. Based on the first priority level and the network bandwidth capacity information, the first computer system may configure a priority-based network bandwidth allocation policy that includes parameter(s) applicable to the traffic associated with the virtualized computing instance.
