METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SMART ANCHOR-BASED POSITION ESTIMATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18110481 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SMART ANCHOR-BASED POSITION ESTIMATION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a smart anchor-based position estimation method and apparatus for vehicles using ultra-wideband technology. The method involves identifying line-of-sight anchors, selecting reference anchors, and estimating the position of a tag based on the reference anchors.

  • Identifying line-of-sight (LOS) anchors among the anchors mounted in a vehicle
  • Selecting reference anchors from the LOS anchors
  • Estimating the position of a tag based on the selected reference anchors
  • Reference anchors are chosen based on the rate of formation of a UWB link to the tag and the accuracy of the estimated position

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in various industries such as logistics, transportation, and indoor positioning systems.

Problems Solved

1. Improved accuracy in position estimation for vehicles 2. Efficient utilization of ultra-wideband technology for location tracking

Benefits

1. Enhanced tracking and monitoring of vehicles 2. Increased efficiency in navigation systems 3. Reduced errors in position estimation

Potential Commercial Applications

Optimizing fleet management systems with precise location tracking capabilities.

Possible Prior Art

Prior art may include similar methods of position estimation using anchor-based systems in different contexts such as indoor navigation or asset tracking.

Unanswered Questions

How does the method handle obstacles or signal interference in the environment?

The abstract does not mention how the system deals with obstacles or signal interference that may affect the accuracy of position estimation.

What is the range of the ultra-wideband technology used in this method?

The abstract does not specify the range of the ultra-wideband technology employed in the position estimation process.

Original Abstract Submitted

A smart anchor-based position estimation method and apparatus are disclosed. The position estimation method, performed by a position estimation apparatus, includes: identifying one or more line-of-sight (LOS) anchors from among one or more anchors mounted in a vehicle; selecting reference anchors from among the one or more LOS anchors; and estimating a position of a tag based on a number of the reference anchors. The reference anchors are selected based on a rate of formation of an ultra-wideband (UWB) link to the tag and accuracy of the estimated position of the tag.
