SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ASSESSING HEALTH OF BRAKE ROTORS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18077691 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ASSESSING HEALTH OF BRAKE ROTORS

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a system designed to evaluate the health of a rotor in a friction brake used to slow down a vehicle's wheel. The system includes modules to control the brake pressure and diagnose the rotor's condition while the vehicle is moving at a crawl speed.

  • The brake control module activates the friction brake at a specific pressure to maintain the vehicle's crawl speed.
  • The diagnostic module records the wheel's rotational speed, detects any changes exceeding a set threshold, and generates notifications indicating the rotor's health status.
  • The system can alert when the rotor is healthy or requires attention, ensuring optimal brake performance.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Automated assessment of rotor health in a friction brake system.
  • Real-time monitoring of wheel speed to detect rotor issues.
  • Notification system for indicating rotor condition.
  • Targeted pressure control for maintaining vehicle speed.

Potential Applications: The technology can be applied in various vehicle braking systems, including cars, trucks, and industrial machinery.

Problems Solved:

  • Ensures timely maintenance of brake rotors.
  • Prevents potential brake failures.
  • Improves overall vehicle safety and performance.

Benefits:

  • Enhances vehicle safety by monitoring brake rotor health.
  • Reduces the risk of accidents due to brake malfunctions.
  • Optimizes brake system maintenance for cost-effectiveness.

Commercial Applications: Title: "Advanced Rotor Health Assessment System for Vehicle Brakes" This technology can be utilized by automotive manufacturers, fleet operators, and maintenance service providers to enhance vehicle safety and reduce maintenance costs.

Prior Art: Prior research may include studies on brake rotor monitoring systems and automated diagnostic tools for vehicle components.

Questions about Rotor Health Assessment Systems: 1. How does the system determine the threshold for detecting changes in wheel speed? 2. What are the potential implications of using this technology in autonomous vehicles?

Original Abstract Submitted

A system configured to assess health of a rotor of a friction brake configured to brake a wheel of a vehicle. The system includes a brake control module configured to actuate the friction brake at a target pressure sufficient to maintain the vehicle at a crawl speed. A diagnostic module is configured to, while the vehicle is at the crawl speed and the friction brake is at the target pressure: record rotational speed of the wheel; identify a change in the rotational speed of the wheel; and determine whether the change in the rotational speed of the wheel exceeds a predetermined threshold; generate a notification indicating that the rotor of the friction brake configured to brake the wheel is healthy; and generate a notification indicating that the rotor requires attention.
