SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR AUTOMATICALLY LEVELING AN AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT USING FORWARD-LOOKING SENSOR DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18072407 titled 'SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR AUTOMATICALLY LEVELING AN AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT USING FORWARD-LOOKING SENSOR DATA

Simplified Explanation

The method described in the patent application is for automatically leveling an agricultural implement being towed by a work vehicle. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • Receiving data on the field profile in front of the work vehicle
  • Identifying inclined surfaces in the field
  • Determining control actions to maintain the implement's inclination angle
  • Executing control actions as the vehicle travels across inclined surfaces

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in precision agriculture, where accurate and consistent implement leveling is crucial for optimal crop growth.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of manually adjusting the implement's inclination angle, which can be time-consuming and imprecise.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include increased efficiency in farming operations, improved crop yield, and reduced operator fatigue.

Potential Commercial Applications

Commercial applications of this technology could include agricultural equipment manufacturers incorporating automatic leveling systems into their products to enhance their value and appeal to farmers.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be existing systems that automatically adjust the height of agricultural implements based on terrain conditions.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology handle sudden changes in terrain elevation?

The patent application does not specify how the system reacts to abrupt changes in terrain elevation, such as hills or ditches. This could be a potential limitation of the technology.

What is the impact of inclement weather conditions on the system's performance?

The patent application does not address how the system functions in adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow. This could be a concern for farmers operating in challenging environments.

Original Abstract Submitted

In one aspect, a method for automatically leveling an agricultural implement being towed by a work vehicle includes receiving data associated with a field profile of a forward portion of a field positioned in front of the work vehicle relative to a direction of travel of the work vehicle, and identifying an inclined surface within the forward portion of the field that the work vehicle will encounter as the work vehicle tows the agricultural implement across the field based at least in part on the data. The method also includes determining one or more control actions to maintain an inclination angle of the agricultural implement within a predetermined angular inclination range based at least in part on the identification of the inclined surface, and executing the one or more control actions as at least one of the work vehicle or the agricultural implement travels across the inclined surface.
