MEDICAL DISINFECTION DEVICE WITH VISIBLE DISINFECTION INDICATOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18071869 titled 'MEDICAL DISINFECTION DEVICE WITH VISIBLE DISINFECTION INDICATOR
Simplified Explanation
The invention is a disinfection cap for medical connectors that includes a visual indicator to show when sufficient scrubbing effort and time have been expended to disinfect the device. The cap has a housing with a disinfection medium, like a disinfectant sponge, that rotates against the medical device to provide scrubbing action. A visualization chamber within the cap contains two isolated fluids of distinct colors that mix when the collar is rotated, changing the color of the resultant mixture to indicate disinfection.
- External housing with disinfection medium
- Rotating collar for scrubbing action
- Visualization chamber with color-changing indicator
- Positive visual feedback for clinician
Potential Applications
This technology can be applied in various medical settings where disinfection of connectors is crucial, such as hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
Problems Solved
1. Ensures proper disinfection of medical connectors 2. Provides visual feedback to clinicians for peace of mind
Benefits
1. Reduces the risk of infections 2. Improves patient safety 3. Streamlines disinfection process for healthcare providers
Potential Commercial Applications
"Disinfection Cap for Medical Connectors: Enhancing Infection Control in Healthcare Settings"
Possible Prior Art
There may be similar devices on the market that aim to disinfect medical connectors, but the specific combination of features in this invention, such as the color-changing visual indicator, may be unique.
Unanswered Questions
How does the color-changing indicator work exactly?
The abstract mentions two isolated fluids of distinct colors that mix to create a new color, but the specific mechanism of this process is not detailed.
Are there any specific disinfectant sponges recommended for use with this cap?
The abstract mentions a disinfectant sponge as the disinfection medium, but it does not specify if there are any preferred or recommended types of sponges for optimal disinfection.
Original Abstract Submitted
A disinfection cap or device for disinfecting medical connectors. The cap includes a visual indicator that changes color after sufficient scrubbing effort and time have been expended by a clinician to disinfect the medical device, giving positive visual feedback to the treating clinician. An external housing of the cap includes a disinfection medium, such as a disinfectant sponge that is coupled to a rotating collar. The housing is oriented so that the sponge contacts the medical device to be cleaned. Collar rotation in turn rotates the disinfectant sponge against the VAD, providing scrubbing action. A visualization chamber within the cap contains two isolated fluids of distinct colors. As the collar is rotated it mixes the two isolated fluids, changing color of the resultant mixture. When the visualization chamber shows the new, mixed third color, the medical device is disinfected.
