A disinfecting cap configured to engage an open female luer connector includes a housing having an open first end, a second end, and at least one sidewall extending between the first end and the second end. The cap also includes an absorbent support or sponge disposed in the housing configured to contain a cleaning solution for cleaning and/or disinfecting portions of the open female luer connector engaged to the cap. The cap further includes a plug disposed in the housing configured to prevent ingress of the cleaning solution into a lumen in the open female luer connector.
