INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS USING PARALLAX IN IMAGES CAPTURED FROM A PLURALITY OF DIRECTIONS, METHOD AND STORAGE MEDIUM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18064689 titled 'INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS USING PARALLAX IN IMAGES CAPTURED FROM A PLURALITY OF DIRECTIONS, METHOD AND STORAGE MEDIUM

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an information processing apparatus that includes a processor and memory. The apparatus functions as an image acquisition unit, index detection unit, correction unit, and determination unit.

  • The image acquisition unit acquires images captured from multiple directions using an image capturing unit.
  • The index detection unit detects information about an index appearing on the acquired images.
  • The correction unit determines a correction to either correct a depth value calculated from parallax in the acquired images or correct the parallax itself based on the detected information.
  • The determination unit decides whether to execute the correction based on the state of the index appearing on one of the acquired images.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be used in various fields that require accurate depth calculations, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and 3D modeling.
  • It can be applied in robotics for depth perception and object recognition.
  • Medical imaging applications can benefit from this technology for accurate depth measurements in diagnostic imaging.

Problems Solved

  • The technology solves the problem of inaccurate depth calculations caused by parallax in images captured from multiple directions.
  • It addresses the issue of incorrect parallax measurements that can affect the accuracy of depth calculations.
  • The technology solves the problem of determining when and how to correct the depth values or parallax based on the information detected from the index appearing on the images.

Benefits

  • The apparatus provides more accurate depth calculations by correcting the depth values or parallax.
  • It improves the quality of images used in augmented reality, virtual reality, and 3D modeling applications.
  • The technology enhances the performance of robotics systems by providing accurate depth perception and object recognition capabilities.
  • In medical imaging, the technology ensures precise depth measurements, leading to more accurate diagnoses.

Original Abstract Submitted

An information processing apparatus includes a processor and a memory coupled to the processor and storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to function as an image acquisition unit, an index detection unit, a correction unit, and a determination unit. The image acquisition unit is configured to acquire images captured by an image capturing unit configured to perform image capturing from a plurality of directions. The index detection unit configured to detect information about an index appearing on the acquired images. The correction unit is configured to determine a correction to: (1) correct a depth value calculated from parallax in the acquired images, or (2) correct the parallax, based on the detected information. The determination unit is configured to determine whether to execute the correction based on a state of the index appearing on one of the acquired images.
