ELECTRICAL ARC-FLASH PROTECTION BASED ON PERSONNEL PROXIMITY SENSING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18059883 titled 'ELECTRICAL ARC-FLASH PROTECTION BASED ON PERSONNEL PROXIMITY SENSING

Simplified Explanation

The abstract of the patent application describes a system that includes sensors, a processor, and a notification system to detect personnel near electrical equipment, calculate safety parameters, and control Overcurrent Protective Devices (OCPDs) dynamically. The notification system informs related personnel about the control and safety parameters.

  • The system includes a plurality of sensors to detect personnel near electrical equipment.
  • A processor obtains data from the equipment and sensors, calculates safety parameters, and controls OCPDs based on these parameters.
  • The notification system informs related personnel about the control and safety parameters.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in industrial settings where there is a need to ensure the safety of personnel working near electrical equipment.

Problems Solved

This technology helps in preventing accidents by dynamically controlling OCPDs based on safety parameters calculated in real-time.

Benefits

The system enhances safety by automatically adjusting OCPDs without human intervention, reducing the risk of electrical accidents.

Potential Commercial Applications

"Dynamic OCPD Control System for Personnel Safety in Industrial Settings" could be used in manufacturing plants, construction sites, and other industrial environments to improve safety measures.

Possible Prior Art

There may be prior art related to systems that monitor personnel proximity to equipment and control safety devices accordingly, but specific examples are not provided in this abstract.

Unanswered Questions

How does the system differentiate between personnel and other objects detected by the sensors?

The abstract does not specify how the system distinguishes between personnel and other objects in the proximity of the electrical equipment.

What is the range of the sensors and how does it affect the accuracy of personnel detection?

The abstract does not mention the range of the sensors or how it impacts the accuracy of detecting personnel near the electrical equipment.

Original Abstract Submitted

A system includes a plurality of sensors, a processor, and a notification system. The plurality of sensors detects personnel within a proximity from an electrical equipment. The processor obtains data from the electrical equipment and the detection from the plurality of sensors; calculates safety parameters based on the data and the detection; and controls one or more Overcurrent Protective Devices (OCPDs), dynamically and without human intervention, by changing a plurality of relay settings based on the safety parameters. The notification system obtains information comprising the control and safety parameters from the processor and notifies the information to related personnel.
