VIDEO ENCODING AND DECODING METHOD FOR ADAPTIVELY DETERMINING CHROMA INTRA DIRECTIONAL PREDICTION MODE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18035786 titled 'VIDEO ENCODING AND DECODING METHOD FOR ADAPTIVELY DETERMINING CHROMA INTRA DIRECTIONAL PREDICTION MODE

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a video encoding and decoding method that adaptively determines a chroma intra-directional prediction mode based on the characteristics of the chroma block and the luma block.

  • The video encoding method and video decoding method modify the directional mode of a luma block to match the characteristics of a chroma block when a DM mode is used for intra prediction of the chroma signal.
  • Factors considered for adapting the directional mode include the position and size of the chroma block, the presence of reference samples, and the size of the luma block.
  • The modified directional mode is used for intra prediction of the chroma signal.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in:

  • Video compression algorithms
  • Video streaming services
  • Video editing software

Problems Solved

  • Improved video quality in terms of chroma signal prediction

Original Abstract Submitted

A video encoding method and a video decoding method are provided for adaptively determining a chroma intra-directional prediction mode. When a DM mode is applied for intra prediction of a chroma signal, the video encoding method and the video decoding method adaptively modify the directional mode of a luma block to conform to the characteristics of a chroma block by considering the position and size of the chroma block, the presence of reference samples, and the size of the luma block. The video encoding method and the video decoding method use the modified directional mode for intra prediction of the chroma signal.
