PHOTOGRAPHING METHOD AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18033680 titled 'PHOTOGRAPHING METHOD AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for a mobile phone to recognize hand gestures by analyzing bone points and gesture feature points in images.

  • The method involves determining bone points of a user's hand in an image using a bone point recognition algorithm.
  • Two gesture feature points are then identified from the bone points to construct a gesture vector representing the hand's state.
  • By comparing the gesture vectors in subsequent image frames, the device can detect hand flip gestures.

Key Features and Innovation

  • Utilizes bone point recognition algorithm to identify hand gestures.
  • Constructs gesture vectors based on gesture feature points for gesture recognition.
  • Detects hand flip gestures by comparing gesture vectors in consecutive image frames.

Potential Applications

The technology can be used in:

  • Photography applications for gesture-based controls.
  • Augmented reality and virtual reality for interactive hand gestures.
  • Biometric security systems for hand gesture authentication.

Problems Solved

  • Accurate recognition of hand gestures in images.
  • Efficient detection of hand flip gestures.
  • Enhanced user experience in gesture-controlled devices.

Benefits

  • Improved user interaction with electronic devices.
  • Enhanced security through gesture-based authentication.
  • Simplified photography controls using hand gestures.

Commercial Applications

  • Gesture-controlled cameras for photography enthusiasts.
  • Security systems for access control using hand gestures.
  • Integration into virtual reality and augmented reality applications for immersive experiences.

Questions about Hand Gesture Recognition

Question 1

How does the bone point recognition algorithm work in identifying hand gestures?

The bone point recognition algorithm analyzes the positions of key points in the hand, such as joints and knuckles, to determine the structure and orientation of the hand in the image.

Question 2

What are the potential limitations of using hand gestures for authentication purposes?

While hand gestures can provide a convenient and intuitive way for authentication, potential limitations may include environmental factors affecting gesture recognition accuracy and the need for backup authentication methods in case of gesture misinterpretation.

Original Abstract Submitted

A photographing method is disclosed. By implementing the method, an electronic device , for example, a mobile phone, may determine bone points of a hand of a user in an image by using a bone point recognition algorithm, and determine two gesture feature points from the bone points. Then the electronic device may construct, by using positions of the two gesture feature points on a horizontal coordinate axis, a gesture vector representing a state of the hand (a palm or the back of the hand). Further, the electronic device may determine a gesture vector of a subsequent image frame by using the same method. When recognizing that a direction of the gesture vector in the subsequent image frame is opposite to a direction of a gesture vector in an initial image frame, the electronic device may determine that the user has made a hand flip gesture.
