SECONDARY BATTERY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18013478 titled 'SECONDARY BATTERY

Simplified Explanation

The present invention is a secondary battery with an insulation sheet made of different materials in different regions to block thermal conduction, prevent light reflection during welding, and allow for vision inspection of foreign matter.

  • The secondary battery comprises an electrode assembly, a first terminal, an insulation sheet, a case, and a cap plate.
  • The insulation sheet has a first region with three layers covering the upper side of the electrode assembly and a second region capable of transmitting light.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in various electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

Problems Solved

1. Thermal conduction between the electrode assembly and cap plate is blocked, preventing overheating. 2. Light reflection during welding is prevented, ensuring proper assembly. 3. Vision inspection can detect any foreign matter, ensuring quality control.

Benefits

1. Improved safety due to blocked thermal conduction. 2. Enhanced manufacturing process with prevention of light reflection. 3. Quality control through vision inspection for foreign matter.

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology can be utilized by battery manufacturers, electronic device manufacturers, and automotive companies for safer and more efficient battery production.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of insulation sheets with uniform material composition, which may not provide the same benefits as the invention with different material regions.

Unanswered Questions

How does the technology impact the overall performance of the secondary battery?

The article does not provide specific data on how the technology affects the performance metrics of the secondary battery, such as energy density, cycle life, or charging/discharging efficiency.

Are there any limitations or drawbacks associated with implementing this technology?

The article does not mention any potential limitations or drawbacks that may arise from using insulation sheets with different material regions in secondary batteries.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present invention relates to a secondary battery in which a first region and a second region of an insulation sheet are made of different materials, and thus thermal conduction between an electrode assembly and a cap plate can be blocked, light reflection that may occur during welding can be prevented, and the presence of checking foreign matter can be checked through vision inspection. Disclosed in an embodiment is a secondary battery comprising: an electrode assembly having a first electrode tab and a second electrode tab; a first terminal electrically connected to the first electrode tab of the electrode assembly; an insulation sheet having a first region covering the upper side of the electrode assembly and a second region covering both long sides of the electrode assembly; a case accommodating the electrode assembly, the first terminal, and the insulating sheet; and a cap plate sealing an top opening of the case, wherein in the insulation sheet, the first region consists of three layers and the second region is capable of transmitting light.
