This application relates to the field of communication technologies, and discloses a communication method and apparatus, to provide a manner of setting a duration value of a timer in sidelink communication. A first terminal receives sidelink control information SCI from a second terminal, where the SCI indicates a sidelink time domain resource. The first terminal determines a first duration value of a first timer. The first duration value belongs to a duration value set configured for a resource pool or a duration value set configured for a sidelink, and the duration value set includes at least one duration value. The first terminal starts the first timer at a first moment, and monitors sidelink control information and/or sidelink data information in at least one time unit within the first duration value.
