Mixing Segments With Different Sizes For Segment Routing - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17967430 titled 'Mixing Segments With Different Sizes For Segment Routing

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method implemented by a node in a segment routing (SR) network domain. The method involves receiving a packet from another network domain that needs to pass through the SR network domain using segment identifiers (SIDs). The node obtains compressed SIDs corresponding to some of the SIDs and generates a segment routing header (SRH) with a list of segments and a segment left (SL) field. The SRH is then added to the packet, and the packet is forwarded to another node in the SR network domain.

  • The method involves receiving and forwarding packets in a segment routing network domain.
  • The packets are processed using segment identifiers (SIDs) to determine their path.
  • Compressed SIDs are used to optimize the routing process.
  • A segment routing header (SRH) is generated and added to the packet.
  • The SRH contains a list of segments and a segment left (SL) field.
  • The packet is then forwarded to the next node in the segment routing network domain.

Potential Applications

  • This method can be applied in various network domains that utilize segment routing.
  • It can be used in data centers, telecommunications networks, and other large-scale networks.
  • The method can improve the efficiency and performance of packet forwarding in segment routing networks.

Problems Solved

  • The method solves the problem of efficiently routing packets in a segment routing network domain.
  • It addresses the need for optimized routing using compressed segment identifiers (SIDs).
  • The method ensures that packets are correctly forwarded to their intended destinations in the network.

Benefits

  • The use of compressed SIDs reduces the overhead and improves the efficiency of packet forwarding.
  • The segment routing header (SRH) provides a clear and structured way to specify the path of a packet.
  • The method allows for flexible and dynamic routing in segment routing networks.
  • It enhances the scalability and performance of network routing in large-scale environments.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method implemented by a first node in a segment routing (SR) network domain includes receiving, from a second node of another network domain, a packet that is to pass through the SR network domain in accordance with segment identifiers (SIDs). The method also includes obtaining compressed SIDs corresponding to some of the SIDs. The method includes generating, by the first node, a segment routing header (SRH) having a list of segments and a segment left (SL) field. The method finally includes adding the SRH to the packet, and forwarding the packet with the SRH to a third node in the SR network domain.
