In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may identify a maximum number of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) layers for a communication based at least in part on at least one of a number of channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) ports associated with a network node, or a transition of a transmission reception point (TRP) associated with the network node to or from a dormancy state. The UE may perform the communication in accordance with the maximum number of MIMO layers. Numerous other aspects are described.
