PROVIDING SECURITY CREDENTIALS TO AN UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17906432 titled 'PROVIDING SECURITY CREDENTIALS TO AN UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE

Simplified Explanation

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in this patent application. The innovation focuses on enabling communication between a user equipment (UE) associated with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and an unmanned aerial system service supplier (USS) in a cellular terrestrial network. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • A UE associated with a UAV establishes a connection with a unified data management (UDM) entity to communicate with a USS.
  • The UDM entity sends a security configuration to the UE or an access and mobility management function (AMF) through a non-access stratum transport message.
  • The security configuration includes security credentials that allow communication between the UE and the USS.
  • The AMF sends an acknowledgement message to confirm successful receipt of the security configuration.
  • Upon receiving the acknowledgement, the UDM entity sends a message to the USS.
  • The UE then sends a registration request to the USS.
  • The UE and the USS can communicate securely using the security credentials provided in the security configuration.

Potential Applications

  • Communication between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned aerial system service suppliers (USS) in cellular networks.
  • Enabling secure and efficient data exchange between UAVs and USS for various applications such as aerial photography, package delivery, surveillance, etc.

Problems Solved

  • Facilitates secure communication between UAVs and USS in cellular networks.
  • Simplifies the process of establishing a connection and exchanging data between UAVs and USS.
  • Ensures the confidentiality and integrity of the communication between UAVs and USS.

Benefits

  • Enables seamless integration of UAVs into cellular networks for improved communication capabilities.
  • Enhances the efficiency and reliability of UAV operations by providing secure and reliable communication channels.
  • Simplifies the setup and configuration process for UAVs to connect with USS in cellular networks.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) associated with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a cellular terrestrial network may establish a connection with a unified data management (UDM) entity for communications with an unmanned aerial system service supplier (USS). The UE, or an access and mobility management function (AMF), may receive a security configuration from the UDM entity in a non-access stratum transport message. The security configuration may include one or more security credentials that enable communications between the UE and the USS. The AMF may transmit an acknowledgement message indicating the UE successfully received the indication of the security configuration. The UDM may transmit a message to the USS based on receiving the acknowledgment message. The UE may transmit a registration request to the USS. The UE and the USS may communicate according to the security credentials of the security configuration.
