Low-Power Wake Up Radio Operation in Wireless Communication - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17904629 titled 'Low-Power Wake Up Radio Operation in Wireless Communication

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for a user equipment (UE) to transition from a radio resource control (RRC) state to a wakeup radio (WUR) state, enabling power-saving operations while maintaining communication with a base station.

Key Features and Innovation

  • UE receives parameters from the base station for WUR state operation, including enabling WUR and configuring WUR reference signaling.
  • UE enters the WUR state from the RRC state based on parameters received from the base station.
  • While in the WUR state, the UE performs tasks such as monitoring WUR signals, measuring WUR reference signaling, and implementing a WUR discontinuous reception cycle for signal monitoring.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in wireless communication systems to improve power efficiency and reduce energy consumption in user equipment.

Problems Solved

The technology addresses the need for power-saving mechanisms in wireless communication devices without compromising communication reliability.

Benefits

  • Enhanced power efficiency in user equipment.
  • Improved battery life in wireless devices.
  • Seamless transition between different operational states for optimal performance.

Commercial Applications

  • Mobile devices
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Smart home automation systems

Prior Art

Questions about the Technology

How does the WUR state operation benefit power efficiency in user equipment?

The WUR state operation allows the UE to conserve power by enabling a low-power mode while still maintaining communication with the base station.

What are the key tasks performed by the UE while in the WUR state?

While in the WUR state, the UE monitors WUR signals, measures WUR reference signaling, and implements a discontinuous reception cycle for signal monitoring.

Original Abstract Submitted

A user equipment (UE) is configured to enter a radio resource control (RRC) state with a base station wherein network operations are performed using a main radio (MR), receive a first set of parameters from the base station for wakeup radio (WUR) state operation wherein the UE enables a WUR and powers down the MR to an off or deep sleep state, the first set of parameters including a parameter enabling the WUR state operation and a configuration of WUR reference signaling (WUR-RS), receive a second set of parameters from the base station for WUR setup and a WUR signal (WUR-S) configuration and enter the WUR state from the RRC state, wherein, while in the WUR state, the UE performs uses the WUR including at least one of monitoring for the WUR-S, measuring the WUR-RS, or implementing a WUR discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle for WUR-S and WUR-RS signal monitoring.
