SEQUENTIAL GARBAGE COLLECTION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17899137 titled 'SEQUENTIAL GARBAGE COLLECTION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an example apparatus for sequential garbage collection in memory devices.

  • Memory device with multiple memory blocks associated with logical block addresses (LBAs)
  • Controller monitors read and write operations for different command sizes on memory blocks
  • Controller monitors read and write operations for a specific LBA
  • Controller determines type of garbage collection operation based on monitoring

Potential Applications

  • Data storage systems
  • Solid-state drives
  • Embedded systems

Problems Solved

  • Efficient garbage collection in memory devices
  • Optimization of memory block usage
  • Improved performance of memory operations

Benefits

  • Increased efficiency in memory management
  • Enhanced performance of memory devices
  • Extended lifespan of memory devices

Original Abstract Submitted

An example apparatus for sequential garbage collection can include a memory device including a plurality of memory blocks associated with a plurality of logical block addresses (LBAs). The example apparatus can include a controller coupled to the memory device. The controller can be configured to monitor a quantity of read operations and a quantity of write operations associated with a plurality of command sizes performed on a portion of the plurality of memory blocks. The controller can be configured to monitor a quantity of read operations and a quantity of write operations associated with a particular LBA. The controller can be configured to determine a type of garbage collection operation to perform based on the monitoring.
