the invention consists of an artificial conversation agent adapted to conduct conversations using natural language in order to exchange information and otherwise interact with human users, generally including an avatar. this agent is intended to be useful for tasks requiring human interaction such as behavioral modification therapies, continuous monitoring or personal assistance. many operations and interactions that are usually performed with or using a therapist, customer service representative or other human agent, may be performed using the agent of the invention. for instance, the system is useful for helping subjects maintain fitness or training regimens, quitting smoking or other addictions, sticking to medication programs, changing eating or other habits, overcoming phobias, booking tickets and reservations, providing and receiving information in such contexts as hotel lobbies or airports, and in general providing the ability to interact intelligently with or as human beings in a variety of contexts and their combinations.
