3D printed reflectors for disinfection lighting - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240343915 titled '3D printed reflectors for disinfection lighting

The invention provides a method for producing a 3D item using fused deposition modeling, specifically through a 3D printing stage that includes a reflective material deposition stage.

  • The method involves providing 3D printable material consisting of a polymeric matrix material that is transmissive for UV radiation, such as thermoplastic material, and a reflective material that is reflective for UV radiation and enclosed by the polymeric matrix material.
  • The reflective material in the 3D printable material comprises a first fluoropolymer.
  • The 3D printable material is deposited to create the 3D item, which contains 3D printed material made up of the matrix material and the reflective material.

Potential Applications: - Manufacturing of customized reflective 3D items - Prototyping in industries like automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods - Creating unique art pieces with reflective properties

Problems Solved: - Enhancing the aesthetic appeal of 3D printed objects - Improving the functionality of reflective surfaces in 3D printing - Increasing the design possibilities for 3D printing projects

Benefits: - Enhanced visual appeal of 3D printed objects - Increased design flexibility for creators - Improved reflective properties in 3D printed items

Commercial Applications: Reflective 3D printing technology can be utilized in industries such as fashion, architecture, and interior design to create visually striking and functional objects.

Questions about Reflective 3D Printing: 1. How does the reflective material affect the overall durability of the 3D printed item? 2. What are the potential limitations of using reflective materials in fused deposition modeling?

Original Abstract Submitted

the invention provides a method for producing a 3d item () by means of fused deposition modelling, the method comprising a 3d printing stage, wherein the 3d printing stage comprises a reflective material deposition stage, wherein the reflective material deposition stage comprises: (a) providing 3d printable material () comprising (i) a polymeric matrix material () that is transmissive for uv radiation, especially wherein the polymeric matrix material () comprises thermoplastic material, and (ii) a reflective material () that is reflective for the uv radiation and that is at least partly enclosed by the polymeric matrix material (); wherein the reflective material () comprises a first fluoropolymer; and (b) depositing the 3d printable material (), to provide the 3d item () comprising 3d printed material () comprising the matrix material () and the reflective material ().
