a method for reducing false positives of a metal detector in detecting a target, including transmitting a transmit magnetic field; receiving a receive magnetic field to produce a receive signal; processing the receive signal using at least two different functions to produce a first signal and a second signal; the at least two different functions are configured such that the first signal is sensitive to at least one characteristic of the target, and such that the second signal is a representation of a likelihood function of the first signal, the representation of the likelihood function taking into consideration an effect of an environment upon the first signal; and classifying the receive signal into a classification of one of at least three possible classes based on at least the second signal; and producing an indicator output signal based on the classification. the indicator output signal is different for different classifications and the indicator output signal includes an audio signal.
