MANAGEMENT OF A SPLIT PHYSICAL LAYER IN A RADIO AREA NETWORK - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18745722 titled 'MANAGEMENT OF A SPLIT PHYSICAL LAYER IN A RADIO AREA NETWORK

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods and systems for wireless communication with a wireless terminal. A baseband unit and a remote radio unit work together to handle the physical-layer protocol of a radio access network. The system can determine communication quality and send related messages to an external entity.

  • The system involves a baseband unit (BBU) and a remote radio unit (RRU) working together to handle the physical-layer protocol of a radio access network (RAN).
  • The RRU performs a remaining portion of the PHY protocol, while the BBU handles the first portion.
  • Communication between the BBU and RRU occurs over a non-deterministic communication link.
  • An external entity is used to receive messages related to communication quality parameters.
  • The system can determine communication quality and send messages to the external entity.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various wireless communication systems, such as cellular networks, to improve communication quality and efficiency.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses the challenge of efficiently handling the physical-layer protocol of a radio access network in wireless communication systems.

Benefits

The system allows for improved communication quality and efficiency in wireless networks by dividing the physical-layer protocol tasks between the BBU and RRU.

The key components include a baseband unit, a remote radio unit, and an external entity for handling communication quality parameters.

How does the system improve communication quality in wireless networks?

The system improves communication quality by efficiently dividing the tasks of the physical-layer protocol between the BBU and RRU.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and systems directed to facilitating wireless communication with a wireless terminal are disclosed. A baseband unit (BBU) is configured to perform a first portion of a physical-layer (PHY) protocol of a radio access network (RAN). A remote radio unit (RRU) is configured to perform a remaining portion of the PHY protocol. The RRU is communicatively coupled to the BBU over a non-deterministic communication link. An entity other than the RRU is also used. The system is configured to determine a communication quality parameter and to send a message related to the communication quality parameter to said entity.
