DESALINATION DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18664991 titled 'DESALINATION DEVICE

The abstract describes a desalination battery cell that alternately collects and disperses salt from a saline water solution to produce desalinated water and brine solution.

  • First compartment separated by an anion exchange membrane from a second compartment
  • Each compartment contains a saline water solution and intercalation host electrodes
  • Voltage source supplies electric current to release cations into the solution
  • Controller adjusts electric current to change direction of anions passing through the membrane
  • Desalination process results in desalinated water solution and brine solution

Potential Applications: - Desalination of seawater for drinking water purposes - Industrial water treatment processes - Agricultural irrigation in arid regions

Problems Solved: - Provides a sustainable and energy-efficient method for desalination - Addresses the global water scarcity issue

Benefits: - Cost-effective desalination process - Environmentally friendly solution compared to traditional desalination methods

Commercial Applications: Desalination plants, water treatment facilities, agricultural companies

Questions about Desalination Battery Cell: 1. How does the desalination battery cell compare to traditional desalination methods? 2. What are the long-term implications of using this technology for water treatment processes?

Frequently Updated Research: Ongoing research focuses on improving the efficiency and scalability of desalination battery cells for large-scale applications.

Original Abstract Submitted

A desalination battery cell includes a first compartment separated by an anion exchange membrane from a second compartment, each of the first and second compartments containing a saline water solution having a concentration of dissolved salts cand first and second intercalation host electrodes, respectively, in fluid communication with the solution, a voltage source supplying electric current to the first and second intercalation host electrodes to release cations into the solution, and a controller programmed to adjust an amount of the electric current being supplied to change direction of anions in the solution passing through the anion exchange membrane between the compartments such that the first and second compartments alternately collect and disperse salt from the solution and release desalinated water solution having a concentration cof dissolved salts and a brine solution having a concentration cof dissolved salts such that c>C>C.
