Video Coding Using Multi-resolution Reference Picture Management - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18651615 titled 'Video Coding Using Multi-resolution Reference Picture Management

The patent application describes methods and apparatuses for coding a set of two or more pictures with different spatial resolutions.

  • The set includes at least a first picture coded with a first spatial resolution and a second picture coded with a second spatial resolution.
  • The set of pictures is stored in a decoded picture buffer based on corresponding spatial resolutions.
  • The set of pictures in the decoded picture buffer is used as reference pictures for coding successive pictures.
  • The set of pictures is incorporated into a reference picture list containing pictures with different spatial resolutions.

Potential Applications: - Video streaming services - Video conferencing systems - Security and surveillance systems

Problems Solved: - Efficient coding of pictures with different spatial resolutions - Improved video quality and compression

Benefits: - Enhanced video quality - Reduced bandwidth usage - Improved user experience

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhanced Video Coding Technology for Improved Quality and Efficiency" This technology can be used in various commercial applications such as video streaming services, video conferencing systems, and security and surveillance systems. It can help improve video quality, reduce bandwidth usage, and enhance the overall user experience.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this technology improve video quality and compression? This technology improves video quality by coding pictures with different spatial resolutions and storing them in a decoded picture buffer for reference in coding successive pictures. This allows for more efficient compression and better overall video quality.

2. What are the potential commercial applications of this technology? This technology can be used in video streaming services, video conferencing systems, and security and surveillance systems to enhance video quality, reduce bandwidth usage, and improve user experience.

Original Abstract Submitted

Video coding methods and apparatuses are provided. A set of two or more pictures is coded. The set includes at least a first picture coded with a first spatial resolution, and a second picture coded with a second spatial resolution different from the first spatial resolution. The set of two or more pictures is stored in a decoded picture buffer based on corresponding spatial resolutions. The set of two or more pictures stored in the decoded picture buffer is used as a set of reference pictures for coding one or more successive pictures subsequent to the set of two or more pictures. The set of two or more pictures is incorporated into a reference picture list that contains pictures with at least two different spatial resolutions.
