CODING OF TRANSFORM COEFFICIENTS IN VIDEO CODING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18650020 titled 'CODING OF TRANSFORM COEFFICIENTS IN VIDEO CODING

The patent application describes methods and devices for video encoding, specifically focusing on determining the context index for encoding the Coded Block Flag (CBF) flag of a luma transform block based on the intra subpartition split type.

  • The device determines if the intra subpartition split type is an ISP mode for the current luma transform block in a coding unit.
  • If the split type is not ISP mode, the device sets the first context index for the CBF flag to zero or one based on the transform coefficient levels.
  • If the split type is ISP mode, the device determines the first context index based on whether the current transform unit is the first one to be parsed in the coding unit.
  • The CBF flag is then encoded using the determined first context index.

Potential Applications: - Video compression and streaming technologies - Multimedia applications requiring efficient encoding methods

Problems Solved: - Efficient encoding of video data - Improved compression ratios for video files

Benefits: - Higher quality video encoding - Reduced file sizes for video storage and transmission

Commercial Applications: - Video streaming services - Video editing software development - Multimedia content creation tools

Questions about video encoding technology: 1. How does the determination of the context index impact the efficiency of video encoding?

  - The context index helps optimize the encoding process by adapting to different block types and sizes.

2. What are the potential implications of using the ISP mode for intra subpartition split types in video encoding?

  - The ISP mode can improve the encoding efficiency for specific types of video content.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and devices for video encoding are provided. In the method, the device determines, for a current luma transform block in a coding unit, whether an intra subpartition (ISP) split type is an ISP mode. In response to determining that the intra subpartition split type is not the ISP mode, the device determines a first context index for a Coded Block Flag (CBF) flag of the current luma transform block as being equal to zero or one, where the CBF flag specifies whether the current luma transform block comprises one or more transform coefficient levels not equal to zero. In response to determining that the intra subpartition split type is the ISP mode, the device determines the first context index based on whether a current transform unit is a first one to be parsed in the coding unit. The device encodes the CBF flag based on the first context index.
