PRINTED ANNULAR METAL-TO-METAL SEAL - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18624876 titled 'PRINTED ANNULAR METAL-TO-METAL SEAL

The abstract describes a metal-to-metal seal for sealing the annular space between a well casing and a wellbore. The seal consists of inner and outer portions, each with a central seal portion that flexes radially outward towards the annular space when energized.

  • The metal-to-metal seal has a concave shape in a de-energized state, curving towards the centerline of the seal.
  • The central seal portion includes outer ridges that engage with the outer annular surface when energized, providing a secure seal.
  • The seal is designed to effectively seal the annular space between the well casing and wellbore, preventing leaks and maintaining integrity.

Potential Applications: - Oil and gas drilling operations - Geothermal well installations - Water well construction

Problems Solved: - Leakage in the annular space between well casing and wellbore - Maintaining well integrity in challenging environments

Benefits: - Enhanced sealing capabilities - Increased wellbore integrity - Improved safety and efficiency in drilling operations

Commercial Applications: Metal-to-metal seals can be used in various industries such as oil and gas, geothermal energy, and water well drilling. The technology offers improved sealing solutions for well construction and maintenance, leading to cost savings and enhanced operational performance.

Questions about Metal-to-Metal Seals: 1. How do metal-to-metal seals compare to traditional sealing methods in terms of performance and longevity? Metal-to-metal seals offer superior sealing capabilities and durability compared to traditional methods, ensuring long-lasting integrity in well construction and maintenance.

2. What are the key factors to consider when selecting a metal-to-metal seal for a specific well casing and wellbore configuration? The selection of a metal-to-metal seal should consider factors such as well depth, pressure, temperature, and the specific requirements of the drilling operation to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Original Abstract Submitted

A metal-to-metal seal for sealing an annular space between a well casing and a wellbore. The seal includes an inner portion and an outer portion, each portion including a central seal portion. The central seal portion has a concave shape in a de-energized state which curves towards the centerline of the seal and is capable of flexing radially outward towards surface of the annular space when energized. The central seal portion further includes at least one outer ridge extending outward away from the centerline of the seal and sealingly engages with the outer annular surface when energized.
