IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18618622 titled 'IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an image forming apparatus with a mechanism that controls the contact and separation of a developing roller from a photosensitive member based on the torque of the photosensitive member motor.

  • The apparatus includes a photosensitive member, a developing roller, and a contact/separation mechanism.
  • A photosensitive-member motor rotates and drives the photosensitive member.
  • The control portion detects changes in torque to determine the status of the contact/separation mechanism.

Key Features and Innovation

  • Contact/separation mechanism controls the interaction between developing roller and photosensitive member.
  • Photosensitive-member motor torque is used to monitor the mechanism's status.
  • Control portion identifies failure state based on torque changes.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in various image forming devices such as printers, copiers, and scanners.

Problems Solved

  • Ensures proper contact between developing roller and photosensitive member.
  • Detects failure in the contact/separation mechanism.

Benefits

  • Improves image quality and consistency.
  • Prevents potential damage to the apparatus.
  • Enhances overall performance and reliability.

Commercial Applications

  • Printers, copiers, and scanners in office environments.
  • Manufacturing of image forming equipment for commercial use.

Questions about the Technology

How does the contact/separation mechanism improve image quality?

The mechanism ensures consistent contact between the developing roller and photosensitive member, leading to better image reproduction.

What are the potential risks of failure in the contact/separation mechanism?

Failure in the mechanism can result in poor image quality, damage to the apparatus, and overall performance issues.

Original Abstract Submitted

An image forming apparatus includes: a photosensitive member; a developing roller; a contact/separation mechanism configured to switch between a contact state in which the developing roller is brought into contact with the photosensitive member and a separation state in which the developing roller is separated from the photosensitive member; a photosensitive-member motor configured to rotate and drive the photosensitive member; and a control portion. The control portion configured to determine that the contact/separation mechanism is in a failure state in a case where a torque of the photosensitive-member motor is not detected to have changed by at least a predetermined value within a predetermined time after a predetermined reference timing.
